See You Next Year…God Willing

Hello Loves! Sometimes in life you just have to take every single minute of the day and use it all up on yourself! So, off I go to do just that. I am trying to figure a few things out, health, personally, and professionally wise, to get to a place that I feel better about things that I can control. In order to have a better sense of the controlling capabilities that I have, I must take the time to just be and do me.

So I am taking the rest of this year to focus on my plan of action that I have come up with to tune in to me and tune out to the very chatty and noisy world around me. Since I am stepping away from my blog and offline socially, I want to wish everyone a Glorious Halloween, Happy Thanksgiving, a Merry Christmas, and cheers to close out of another year of life for the books!

Have you ever felt like you needed to take some time away from the online “world”? God willing I will be back online at the start of the New Year and the start of a new decade, sharing some exciting news of some sort. Remember this, that it is ok to step away to step into your life in a more connected way.

Much Love, Nic

Will Never Forget When She Told Me This

Hi my loves! Have you every been bullied by a teacher? I have, and it affected me in such a prolific way still till this day. With my blog being a space of lovingly living courageously I thought I would share my own story.

I always remember this teacher that I had that was beyond mean to me and made my life a living hell in elementary school for an entire school year.  She would pick on me in front of the class, comparing me to her favorite student, making me feel stupid, and at times worthless because I was not ever going to be like her fave student.  I remember I would think to myself, I REALLY didn’t want to be like her, she was stuck up, rude and couldn’t even multiply.  I just didn’t want to be ridiculed in front of the class, I just wanted to do my work and go home!

It wasn’t until the summer before my freshman year in high school when I ran into that teacher again that I was in for a shock.  She looked happy to see me…praised how smart I was and always knew that I was, for getting into the school that I was attending in the Fall and how I’d grown into such a stunning, beautiful young lady.  Pan to me, staring in complete shock thinking…what was I to make of these words, were these words what she really thought?  I had always remembered how cruel she was to me and those days I would go the bathroom and just cry my eyes out.  Was this the same teacher?  Being the polite southern girl that I was, I said thank you, forced a smile, and hide until she left.

A few years later after that I found out that she had passed away from cancer. It was in this moment that my experience with her came into even more of a better perspective.  You do what you are experiencing. If you are unhappy with your appearance you will make other people unhappy with their appearance.  She was overweight and would always make comments about my appearance, and how I thought I was better than everyone else in front of the class.

When life humbles us we can be kind with our words and attempt to right those wrongs that we have done to other people.  I was not aware but at the time I saw her that summer she had been battling cancer.  Humbled by her current experience, making amends for all those days of heart ache and sadness that she caused me.  Sharing kind words of encouragement that I so longed to hear back then, but can humbly say that I was able to experience years later, than not.

I never wish hard moments on anyone, but as I stand here on the other side of many a moment of pain and bad experiences, I know how these many things serves us to make us stronger and give us perspective on being better humans.  I never want to make anyone feel how I felt that entire school year in elementary, but feel only the goodness of kind words that summer before the start of high school.  It is that memory, among many others, that guides me to be kind to others.  It is that memory that also allows me the compassion to see people for more than the words that they may share, if only from a place of pain.

Much Love, Nic

Where You Are Is Good

Happy Friday loves! How has your day, week, been for you? Have you been feeling anything other than yes, today was an amazing day? Get real and be real, that’s how you start acknowledging how you want things to be different than they are. There is always hope for something new and different!

Sometimes life can be and feel overwhelming that when we want to make things better or change things we just don’t know how.  We can become confused or simply feel stuck with just the thought of trying to figure out what direction or move to make to move things in a better direction.  We may think that we have to have something or accomplish this or that before we can begin to make that change.  Lean, in let me whisper something in your ear…you have to start somewhere and there is no better place to start then where you stand.

Yup, all you can do is be how you are right now and in order to make that something different you must start right there as you exist. I have found that starting at YOUR starting line, can help things seem a little less daunting when you turn in and tune in to where YOU are.  Focus on what can be accomplished from where you are and put things into action.  Once you are in action things will move you in the direction that you need to go in. Obstacles that were once there will disappear or appear not as obstacles but simply stepping stones.

Take the first steps from where you are today, this Friday!  Focus on what you can do from where you are.  There is always something that can be done right where you are, just focus on that.  Concentrate on the smaller things and tackle those, especially if the bigger picture seems daunting.  So start where you are and what you can do to move you to where you want to be.

Much Love, Nic

Ice Cream Trucking

Hello, loves! How is life treating you since the last time we came together here? As an adult who is faced with the ridiculous requirement by society to adult, I miss being able to just be a kid again.  Also, still not sure anyone has this adulting thing figured out but I digress.

Sigh, to be a kid again, the days of just trying to have the best day ever!  Riding bikes days on end, avoiding the bully zone with your team of kids there to help you navigate the lay of the kidscape.  Chasing down the sound of the ice cream truck music for that sweet reward of locating the target feeding your belly with the coolness of sweet satisfaction.  Hanging out during recess with other kids in school who wanted nothing but good things for me.   Knowing that it was all about having fun, playing to our hearts content.  Kids would ask you to play not thinking about if you vibed or had the cool this or that.  No, it was just focused on getting your play on coexisting in the neighborhood or playground together as long as you didn’t affect there good times, no issues would pop off for the need to run and tell your mama or visit the principles office.

Now, as a person attempting with all the best of my ability to be an adult, I understand why so many “adults” have a hard time dealing with other people attempting the adulting process.  The adult landscape is a hard one to navigate when there are unsaid laws of the land and vary by your current longitude and latitude coordinates.  It can become overwhelming to say the least to try to figure out this whole new world of “adulting”.  It can seem like a lonely road to walk alone with all these battles to fight solo, with no time to play, no that’s NOT allowed in Adulthood.

Responsibility…blah blah blah blah, this bill…blah blah blah, food and shelter…blah blah blah, other adults…blah blah blah.  It is so overwhelming to try to keep it all balanced as an adult and trying to engage with other adulting people who are on the same road as you.  Some have become jaded, worn out, abused, and disheartening from walking the road of life.  They engage with others based on their experiences through unkindness, harsh criticism, hate, if only to feel like they can better understand others because they are trying to bring them to the level that they are at.  We are forced to grow up, to have it figured out, with expectations of how your truth for you should look like based on societal standards and comfortability.  We have forgotten about how it was to be a kid, just focused on having the best day ever, sharing that day with others with no concern if the other is like us beyond being a human being,  with the focus only on enjoying the moment.

So I ask you a simple question, do you want to swing on the swings with me…I’ll push you higher if you push me high, slide down the slide…thanks for letting me go first, play jump rope sharing the one…you jump while I cheer you on.  Oh and run like hell making sure I am running right next to you listening to that music in the distance where I’ll see you at the ice cream truck when we for a brief moment most definitely have something in common, liking and now eating ice cream at the same time together.  Too bad that we can’t think about the bigger connections as adults beyond ice cream, or sorbet for those vegan and lactose intolerant peeps, cause everyone is welcome at the ice cream truck.

With Love, Nic

Zesty Avocado Cucumber Salad

Hello loves, and happy summer! We are in full on summer, officially anyway, and the foods that we need start to shift to help with the heat and humidity that makes summer, summer. I created this salad months ago when it started to warm up and am now addicted to it. When I say this is my new face summer salad…well THIS is my new summer salad! It is zesty, refreshing, and it just tastes good.

What Ya Need

2 Avocados Large Ripe Rough Chopped

1 Cucumber sliced in rounds (not too thick, but can slice as thin liked)

1/2 red onion sliced thinly in rounds

Dressing:

1/4 cup Lemon Juice

1/2 cup avocado oil

2-3 TBS fresh chopped dill

2-3 cloves minced garlic (depends how garlicky you want it to be)

Salt and Pepper to taste (you want to be heavy on the salt because the cucumbers will release water while sitting)

What Ya Do

  • Add the lemon juice, dill (start with small amount and increase based on taste needs), and garlic, to a small glass bowl.
  • Using a wire whisk add in the avocado oil and whisk to emulsify the oil with the lemon juice.
  • Season with salt and pepper heavily as the cucumbers will release additional water so you want to be sure that the dressing will not be diluted down.
  • Taste dressing for a slight saltiness and if it is zesty enough.
  • In another bowl add the cucumbers and red onion, toss to combine.
  • Add in the cubed ripe avocado and add some of the dressing.
  • Toss to combine adding more of the dressing as needed.
  • For the best flavor impact let sit in the fridge for at least 4 hours or even overnight. The onions and cucumbers will become translucent.
  • Taste before serving to see if additional salt and pepper are needed.
  • Enjoy this refreshing salad.

Hope you enjoy the summer and remember to keep hydrated with water, as well as through the foods that you eat, and be sure to protect your skin from the sun as much as possible, through SPF or protective clothing!

Let’s Get Handsy

Love, a question for you here…when is the last time you pampered and said thank you to your hands? I know, its ok…we can change that today! With a few steps, your hands can be shown some love, care, and appreciation for all that they do and touch!

Did you know that the skin on your hands is thicker than on any other part of your body? It’s thicker because your hands are used in so many ways daily that require that added layer of protection by way of the skin. Those daily tasks can stress and strain your hands, which is why it is so important to show them some love and appreciation in all that they do.

Exfoliate

One of the simplest and rewarding ways to show your hands some love is…EXFOLIATION! Exfoliation helps stimulate the blood flow, removes dead skin buildup, and gives you the opportunity to get some self love time in with yourself. I recommend that this simple process be done at least once a week making sure you follow up with a hydrating body or hand cream making sure to massage it into all areas of the hands making sure not to forget the nail area, so don’t forget those cuticles.

Hydrate

Moisturizing your hands is a crucial act needed for optimal hand health. That why it is important to add back in the hydration that it looses through those many daily tasks that we do every second of the day. Our hands can dry out quickly because of the amount of motion and action that they are engaged in. This action requires an added level of care and attention. For myself, after I wash my hands I make sure that I am using a hydrating hand cream and massage it into my hands, which also helps with circulation a bit. I also use a body butter on my hands at night before I go to bed for an added boost of repair and hydration while I sleep.

What Ya Need

There is no need spend a lot of money on a scrub if you have the following ingredients in your kitchen. Sugar in the raw, the only reason that I keep it in stock is for body care treatments, and coconut oil, is always on hand because it does so much in and out of the kitchen. Added bonus ingredients is cinnamon, lemon juice, or essential oils of choice.

1/4 cup Sugar

1/2 cup Coconut Oil

Hydrating Hand Lotion or Body Butter

Select One Option Below:

1 tsp Cinnamon

1 Lemon Zested and Juiced

10-20 drops Essential

What Ya Do

  • Mix all ingredients together in a glass container, and store in a glass jar with a lid.
  • Allow to set up in the fridge for about an hour.
  • Once setup using a table spoon, spoon out a spoon full into the palm of your hand.
  • Using your hands massage the scrub gently over all areas of your hands. I suggest doing this over a sink so it catches any fall out.
  • Do this motion for about a minute, being sure that you are gentle in pressure.
  • Rinse off using cool water.
  • Apply hand lotion or body butter to your hands massaging the lotion into your hands.

While doing the massaging motions I like to say thank you to my hands for all that they do, and how much I appreciate them for that. Mindful appreciation is important to do, honoring the amazing parts of our body that carry us around each and every day.

Exercise

Another important hand care is to stretch them out, to release some of the tension and heal some of the abuse caused through out daily lives. As an esthetician, I use my hands as part of my practice so I have a routine that I go through to release and relax my hands from the daily use that I can put them through. It is imperative that I do my hand exercises as they are my main tools. A useful guide that I found is something that any everyone should be doing daily, if not several times a day. This article is geared towards those with arthritis, but I say anyone with hands can benefit from these exercises. Check out the eight hand exercises here–>Take Me To Article.

Hands are one of the top neglected parts of the body, that fall into skin care category. I care deeply about hand health and know the importance of care and treatment, through my own daily practice needs. We use them every second of the day on some capacity. It is up to us to be sure that we are taking care of them and showing them much needed love!

Heart Touchy

Hi loves! I was asked about the types of people that warm my heart. Thinking about that question really made me feel the need to highlight these amazing human beings and make me want to champion for their existence in this world.  They have an amazing heart space that deserves to be honored for giving the world more love, kindness and compassion.  A WIN in my book!

#1 Altruistic Champions

I am always amazed at those people who live their lives, I mean their whole existence, focused on helping others.  The ability to make yourself the focus of how you can help someone else.  It is not about them and never will be except the thought of how can I help others that are in need of something for a better quality life.  They understand the impact championing for other people can have and the domino affect that has on the world around us all.  When you exist better, you do better and you are able to give in return to help someone else.

#2 Open-minded Audacity

To be bold enough to be open to the thoughts outside of your own reality and life experiences.  This quality is something that the world could benefit from with more people like this.  It is an ideal that is based on existing and operating in a place of love, of being able to consider other opinions, thoughts, and lifestyles that are so different from what you may know or can even comprehend.  To be humble enough to not allow your mind to keep you from considering other peoples existence here as not worthy or purposeful because it it is outside of who you are.

#3 Unapologetic Uniqueness

I love to see my fellow unicorns out there that are okay with dancing to the beat of their own drum with not one care if others can hear the music that they are dancing to in order to understand why you are moving at that rhythm, beat and timing.  You give no cares about others and their understanding of how and why you are the way you are.  You love the way that they were designed to be and by doing so you unknowingly encourage others to embrace themselves as well.

#4 Not Taking Self Seriously

When you are able to exist from a place of not taking yourself seriously, you have my heart!  Not one single person is so important that they are more valuable than the other.  When you are in a heart space of not taking things seriously you are more open to not taking every life moment as an end all and be all.  You realize that perfection does not exist and do not seek to obtain the unobtainable.  You are better equipped to handle those bumps along the road with grace and humor not allowing it to take you out of the game because you realize that it could be worse and focus on what you can do about it without allowing it to consume you.  Not one person is perfection and for those that know it and able to laugh at their short falls without taking it seriously, I see you and love it.

#5 Passionately Life Living

We all have seen people who have an unwavering zeal for experiencing the many things that they can within their life, or maybe this is who you are.  You aren’t afraid to try new things, or if you are embracing that, fear is the task at hand along the path towards achievement.  You truly live every moment as if it is the last moment on this earth.  Celebrating the small things in life right along with the big things, because every accomplishment is an achievement that deserves to be celebrated.  You are living your life on purpose and that becomes part of your book of life that you are writing each day on earth.

If you are one or a few of the above, you have won my heart.  My love and support is yours to have, as you are a person that encourages me to come from a place of being open, leading more with love.  You all are important to the world and the balance that is needed to provide solitude and peace to those in need.  You seek to challenge the conventional thoughts that we sometimes have that prevents us from seeing that there are realities outside of our little worlds.  Encouraging that there is nothing to be afraid of from others as long as they are coming from that loving heart space, they seek not to harm but to encourage more love.  There can never be too much love in the world, it is the only thing that can help soothe the pains and start the healing process from experiencing the moments of living life.

Hidden Veggie Anti-Inflammatory Soup

Hi loves! How are you doing…hope you are happy and well!? I wanted to talk about the root cause of many illnesses due in large part to the bodies inflammatory response to the foods and not so real foods that many of us eat. This inflammation response is important to note because of the affects that this response has in relation to causing disease in the body. Some of the most common diseases that are associated with this inflammatory response are heart disease, cancer and even Alzheimer’s disease.

With the powerful healing powers of food I thought I would share a really delicious soup that is good for your taste buds and also our bodies. The ingredients used where selected with the anti-inflammation benefits to the body. Making it perfect for being waist line friendly as well as doing a body good in supporting with healing soothing food.

What Ya Need

  • 2 Red Bell Peppers chopped
  • 1/2 Medium Red Onion chopped
  • 2 Garlic cloves chopped
  • 2 cups Broccoli florets and steams chopped
  • 1 1/2-2 cups vegetable broth
  • 1 TBS Fresh Marjoram chopped
  • 1 TBS Avocado oil

What Ya Do

  • Heat the avocado oil in a pan over medium heat.
  • Add red peppers to pan and let cook and blister, so no turning for at least 5 minutes.
  • Turn peppers after 5 minutes and allow to cook an additional 5 minutes on other side.
  • Add onions, garlic, marjoram, and broccoli to pan, stirring to combine.
  • Cook until everything has soften, about 5-8 minutes.
  • Allow to cool for 5-10 minutes before proceeding to next step.
  • Add everything from the pan to the blender.
  • Add vegetable broth and blend until combined, adding more until the preferred consistency is reached.
  • Return to pan and season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • You can heat through or you can actually refrigerate and eat cold.

Why These Ingredients

Red Bell Peppers: contains quercetin which is an antioxidant that reduces the oxidative damage caused by free radicals in the body, that lead to an inflammatory response. I also want to note that peppers are nightshade vegetables that in some people can actually irritate and cause inflammation. A prime example of the need to listen to your body, and how one persons medicine can be another persons poison. I know for myself I find that they are soothing and feel good for me when and after I eat them.

Red Onion: contains quercetin a flavonoid that has antioxidant and anti-inflammation properties, that can prevent the release of histamine. Histamine release is the bodies natural response towards inflammation. This food as medicine food item helps fight against response.

Vegetable Broth: made with root vegetables that are grounding and provide the body with the needed nutritional support for optimal immune, organ, and bodily function. Be sure to choose the low or no sodium version as too much salt can actually trigger an inflammatory response. That is the opposite of what we want to happen, when focusing on eating food as medicine foods.

Broccoli: contains an antioxidant sulforaphane that has amazing anti-inflammatory effects. As you may know, antioxidants help with free radicals that cause cellular damage that leads to an inflammatory response within the body. Antioxidants neutralize these damaging effects, making broccoli the perfect food as medicine food item.

Garlic: contains diallyl disulfide, which is an anti-inflammatory compound that limits the effects of triggering inflammatory cytokines. Cytokines are responsible for regulating the inflammatory response and work with the immune system regulating the response to disease. Garlic helps stop this triggering response of cytokines.

Marjarom: contains high levels of Vitamin-C which is a powerful natural anti-oxidant that helps remove harmful free radicals from the body that can cause inflammation.

Avocado Oil: helps aid in the absorption of nutrients with the other ingredients being low in fat. This is important to be sure that the powerful nutrients profile and makeup of the foods being consumed are able to be adsorbed into the body in order to receive the full benefits of those anti-inflammatory ingredients.

As with all the recipes that I create, I choose ingredients that are plant based and humanely grown and curated items. This is important for me and I always encourage people to make adjustments based on their specific dietary needs and goals. You become what you feed yourself so it is even that much more important to be aware of when you are in need of the true healing properties of food. Remember that when inflammation is continual with no perceived benefit to the body it causes damage and causes dis ease in the body leading to illness and disease.

For Great Skin You Gotta Have A Routine

If you want to have great skin you have to have a routine. Skin care just like life care is cumulative. The more you do on a consistent basis will show! Yes, I know the question HOW popped into your head! For the sake of the cumulative affect on your skin I have an answer for you. Start at the most basic of levels when it comes to creating a skin care routine that works for you now. Here are a few general recommendations to get you started on the right path broken down for morning needs and then evening needs.

Note: This is just a basic routine to help you get use to the foundational basics needed to build upon and with those in mind who don’t or do have a routine for their skin.

Morning Routine Needs

Here is the thing about coming up with YOUR morning routine. It is something that you have to do for how your skin looks each morning you wake up. There will be some days you may feel the need to wash your face and others you just simply rinse with water or use a konjac sponge like I love using in the morning.

  1. Cleanse– Only if needed, simply rinsing your face off with warm or cool water may be all your skin needs first thing in the morning. If for some reason you need to actually wash your face I always recommend using a gentle cleanser nothing too harsh.
  2. Hydrate – Based on your skin type needs now is the time to add some hydration to your skin. If you have dry skin a cream may be your best option where as those with oilier skin types a light moisturizing lotion type will suffice if anything at all. Sometimes the next step provides you with the needed hydration for oily and normal skin types so see how it feels on your skin and adjust accordingly.
  3. Sun Protect – Every person that has skin needs that added level of sun protection exposure through applying a SPF. It doesn’t matter if you can’t see the sun, it is a rainy or cloudy day. The sun rays are still making there way through the rains and clouds. If it is daytime apply sun protection of some sort.

Evening Routine Needs

The evening time is focused about removing the day from your face from makeup, oil, dead skin, dirt and debris. It is also the perfect time to allow your face time to recuperate from the day that it was exposed to. There is the addition of

  1. Cleanse – This is a step that can change so many peoples skin in such amazing ways. Use a cleanser that is formulated for your face and your skin type. DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT use body wash or bar soap! It is not formulated for the more delicate layers of skin on your face.
  2. Second cleanse – If you wear long lasting makeup I always recommend doing a second cleanse to be sure that you breakdown the ingredients that give makeup its staying power. Remember that you are removing products and day time exposure build up that may be sitting in and on top of our pores. Your skin needs time to just be and just breathe so DON’T skip this step.
  3. Hydration – I’m going to be honest…sometimes the effort of being sure that your skin in clear and free of mostly the things we willingly put on our skin. You got to add back in that hydration that may have been stripped through removing mostly those Oils and Creams.

So there you have he basics to get you started down that path of great healthy skin. Healthy skin starts with the basics and this guide on what to do when should help in achieving just that.
